Wealth in Ireland

An increasing number of people believe that wealth is unfairly distributed in Ireland, according to a survey conducted by the independent research organisation TASC.

Some 85% of people questioned think that wealth is not fairly dispersed in Ireland. An increase of 15% on 2008.

Introducing the survey, TASC Director Paula Clancy says “the onset of recession has coincided with an increased awareness of wealth disparities.”

Some 77% of respondents stated that they were ‘very’ or ‘fairly’ concerned with wealth inequality in Ireland.

According to the survey report the current financial climate is having an increasingly negative effect on Irish society. Many people close to retirement, or who have recently retired, are facing a “relatively bleak future”.

The TASC Economic Inequality in Ireland survey of 1000 people also shows that 85% of respondent feel the government should act to reduce the gap between high and low earners.
