I did an unusual thing yesterday-when the news broke of the attack on the RBS Bank in London during the G20 protests; I turned to Twitter for the news.
Ok, so i also turned to Sky News and CNN but i was excited to see how Twitter would react to the news. And of course it did, clicking on the Twitter Search Page (this page, i have to say, is worth bookmarking) showed that “RBS” and “G20” were 2 of the most popular reoccurring words in the thousands of posts.
And this has Google very annoyed.
Google founder Eric Schmidt described Twitter “as a poor mans email“, and perhaps it is, but that hasnt stopped Google from joining it, although roumers still abound that google is to aquire the patform. The problem, as the examiner suggests, is that as a blog is posted on Twitter it is immediate searchable on their site while Google takes longer to update its index.
I tested this yesterday and, by God, Twitter is fast. I crated the post below with the word RBS just to see how quickly the site was updated; and it was updated immediately but no sooner had my post appeared on the page it was replaced a two dozen other posts. it couldnt have been on the page for more then 10 seconds.
I seems to me that the point of Twitter lies not in what the individual posts say but in what the trends are. perhaps Twitter is not so much a “poor mans email” but the internets scrolling ticker.
